Another easy-to-make Apocalypse Strategic Assets guide from EmperorsWrath! This guide provides instruction to create one type of tunnel, the cave mouth opening.
When thinking about how to create some tunnels for Apocalypse battles I figured I needed some variety. I would like some to be natural, some man-made, and some a combination of the two. The Tunnels Strategic Asset says you get D6+3 tunnels, so I needed to make nine different models. I started with what is in my opinion the easiest type to make, basically the cave is just a variant of the Rock Outcroppings that I have previously created.
Start with two inch thick styrofoam. Take an old CD and trace out as many circles as you would like to create. Cut the circles out with a sharp knife or a nichrome wire electric cutter. I use the Hot Wire Foam Factory line of cutting tools for hot wire cutting.
Once you’ve cut out your two inch high foam cylinder you are ready to make the cave mouth opening. I started by cutting the opening itself first, this let me figure out how deep I could go for the rest of the outside shapes. Once I had created three of these I sort of ran out of ideas as to how to make them look different. That’s ok because I have more tunnels to create that I wanted to be totally different from these anyway.
Once the shapes have been finished the only step left is to paint the caves. Check out the Rock Outcroppings article for information on carving and painting styrofoam.
This first set of tunnels was easy to create and took very little time from start to finish. The next designs might be a bit more difficult, but that’s better left for another day.
The nice thing about these caves is that they are small enough to double as objective markers for normal 40K battles, or they can just be used as interesting terrain.
